Social Networking

A recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle explores Social Networking websites. They are more popular now than ever.

The article explains how Facebook.com now has 8.3 million users and is the 11th most visited site on the Internet.

Nonprofit organizations are starting to actively tap into the power of Social Networking sites to build awareness for their organizations, grow their e-mail lists, and increase donations too. Care2.com has more than 5.3 million members and impressive stats about their demographics and how effective their site is at helping nonprofits with fundraising and list building. On their site you can take an action each day that will help make the world a better place – click to help fund breast cancer research, e-mail congress about an important issue etc… Their traffic spikes at holiday time because they have some great e-cards that you can send to your friends — and by sending them you’ll be helping worthy causes too. There is a lot of buzz in the public broadcasting sphere about Gather.com – a social networking site geared to match the interests and demographics of public broadcasting listeners and viewers.

Spend some time checking out these sites and others and think about how you or your organization might tap into their potential.
